We are excited to announce that the second National Students for Justice in Palestine Conference will be held at the University of Michigan from November 2nd – 4th.

Will you support the largest student network for Palestinian solidarity in the United States and help us grow into an organized force for justice?

Titled “From Local Roots to Nationwide Branches: Bridging Student Movements,” this year’s gathering will focus on solidifying a national structure, sharing valuable knowledge across campuses, drawing connections to other indigenous and anti-racist struggles, and facilitating vital discussion on the growing Palestine solidarity movement.

We hope to build on the successes of last year’s conference, which was organized entirely by students and volunteers and attended by 350 students from across 130 campuses. But in order to make this conference a success, we need help from the broader community. Your financial support will go towards helping students from across the country who wish to attend the conference but cannot afford the full cost of travel. Last year, donations from supporters like you helped 80 students who could not afford travel costs attend the conference, and we hope that you will help us continue to offer this level of student support.

Last year, we held 21 informative workshops. We took the first steps towards building a national structure to make our network stronger. We started an immensely important discussion on how to pool knowledge, experiences, and resources.

Creative and engaging Palestinian activism across US college (and now high school!) campuses is an opportunity to grow ourselves as organizers; it is a way to involve new, young people on the issue; it is a means of challenging academic discourses; and now with BDS, it is a chance to create real economic pressures.

Because we are gaining ground, SJPs nationwide are under attack. Our work to get SJPs collaborating and organized is more urgent than ever.

It’s a new semester here at the University of New Mexico and we are excited to be kicking off this year on a strong start! We are currently working on updating the website, and it should be finished within a couple of weeks.

UNM Students for Justice in Palestine

During the week of April 16^th, 20 student organizations at the University of New Mexico will collaborate  to erect a 75ft long, 8ft high “Mock Wall” in Smith Plaza. The wall is intended to represent a number of barriers, both physical and mental, including the Israel/Palestine separation wall, the US/Mexico border fence, and the walls that racism, sexism, ableism, heterosexism, and oppression create. Each of the 20 student groups involved adopted panels to serve as a platform to address the barriers to injustice that the group’s cause faces. In addition to the wall itself, many of the student groups will also be holding educational events during the week of the 16th to create dialogue about how borders are oppressive and what can be done to resist them. This will range from live theater, which portrays the difficulties and humiliation that people who have to cross checkpoints face to panels on sexuality and gender.

The purpose of this public display is to raise awareness about how walls, barriers, and borders are used to create and sustain injustice. The coalition of groups involved hope that by making a physical representation of these barriers, we can make people better understand them and come closer to breaking them down.

The “Mock Wall” will be up for the first three days of the week of April 16th in Smith Plaza (just south of Zimmerman library) and will be open for all. We encourage all members of the community to come and engage in dialogue so that we may question and begin to dismantle the borders that divide us.

The organizations involved in the “Mock Wall Project” include Students for Justice in Palestine, Raza Graduate Student Association,  Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán, Free Alvaro Now, Amnesty International, Association of Architects for Design & Urbanism, (Un)Occupy Albuquerque, SCRAP Productions, Food Not Bombs, A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition, Out Queer Grads, Kiva Club, Queer Straight Alliance, Fair Trade Initiative, African Leadership Opportunity Team, GetEQUAL NM, Students Organizing Actions for Peace, Muslim Student Association, One Million Bones, and Student Dharma Association.

We are pleased to announce to you that on April 16th- April 20th will be the start of our very first Mock Wall Campaign. We are teaming up with 20 different student organizations to build a 75 ft by 8ft tall wall on the University of New Mexico’s Zimmerman Plaza. Not only will there be a mock wall display, but there will be street performances and educational events throughout the week.
